Helping an Ally

Early Playtest

Providing Assistance

Before they make their dice roll, take a mark on a relevant skill to add a die to the outcome of their roll. If you are helping roll a d8 die. If you are hindering roll a d6 Pressure die. You will share in any consequences that result from your ally's dice roll.

Based on the outcome of your die roll, describe how you provide assistance (or hindrance) within the scene.

You can only receive Assistance from a single source during an action. If multiple characters want to assist, then consider performing a Group Challenge.

Group Challenges

When three of more characters work together the Game Moderator will select one of the characters to lead the activity based on which character is predominately leading the narrative. The outcome of the leader's roll will constitute the outcome of the group challenge.

Each of the other characters state how they are contributing to the group effort and roll a relevant attribute. On a Clean or Mixed outcome, they add 1d8 to the leader's dice poll. On a Grim outcome the Game Moderator gains a Tension Token. On a Disastrous outcome, not only does the Game Moderator gain a Tension Token, but they add 1d6 Pressure Dice to the leader's roll.

As An Example...

Our group of magical apprentices, have left their dorm room and must sneak down the hallway, past the Headmasters sleeping quarters, without being caught. Johnathan, being the eager one, is chosen as the leader for the group challenge and both Sandra and Mike must make contributing rolls.

Sanda chooses to roll with Harmony by taking her time, feeling each of the floorboards under her feet, attempting to avoid any that would let out a creak. Mike decides to roll with Grace and show off his gymnastic skills by performing a set of cartwheels down the hallway.

Depending on the outcomes for Sanda and Mike's rolls:

Once Sandra and Mike have made their rolls, Johnathan collects his dice pool adding an extra dice as needed. The outcome of Jonathan's roll will determine the outcome of the group challenge.

Assisting Within A Group Challenge

While performing a Group Challenge, any player that has not yet made their contributing roll to the challenge may provide assistance to one other character as part of the challenge. Providing assistance to another character does not replace your need to contribute to the challenge.

Setting Up Another Character

As a character you are performing an action, that alters the narrative with the hope of making a future dice roll easier for another character, by allowing them to add +1d to their next Action roll if it would be benefited by your actions.

Unlike providing assistance, you do not share in the consequences of the other character, who you are setting up, but you do introduce the possibility of making things worse.

Unlike Providing Assistance, Stetting Up Another Character is not something that can be done in a short moment and typically requires an amount of time to action.

As An Example...

Our adventuring party have dispersed from the main crowd into the shadows of an alleyway running alongside the target's house. Erika, the roguish thief, wants to pick the lock a nearby door to allow them to access the building, but they are worried about being seen by a passing authority figure.

Sean, the performer, wants to help set up Erika for success and plans to go out into the main street to direct the crowds away from the party. They choose to make this a Harmony roll:
