Contingency RPG is a cinematic table-top role playing game (TTRPG), similar in nature to other popular games such as Pathfinder, Dungeons & Dragons etc, with a focus on collaborative storytelling. In this game you and your friends (or maybe even you by yourself) will craft a party of character and embark on a narrative-based adventure.
The system mechanics outlined within this document are designed to be setting agnostic and can be integrated into various genres including, but not limited to, gothic, horror, science fiction and fantasy.
Guiding Principles
Accessible to Everyone
All the rule and core game content, should be made accessible to everyone, without the need for payment or be locked behind needing an account.
Print and Play
All the rules and core game content, should be printable in a clear, player-friendly format that anyone can print at home on a standard printer. Once printed, the entirety of Contingency should be playable without the need for online or digital tools.
Module Design
Different aspects can be added to the game in the form of modules.
Although modules can add interesting and new ways to play within the Contingency system, the core game should still be just as enjoyable whether you are including modules or not.
What you need to play
Dice
In its basic form Contingency RPG is played with two different types of dice. As Contingency RPG is a dice-pool rolling system you will be required to roll multiple dice at a time and hence will need to have a small collection (in most cases 4 to 6 of each is enough) of the following dice.
-
Eight Sided Dice
These dice generally look like two pyramids joined together at their base, having eight sides that are numbered from one (1) to eight (8). Throughout the source material we will refer to these dice as
d8
s.If would also be beneficial to have one of your d8 dice be of a different colour to the others. There are some game mechanics that will require you to roll and keep track of the result from a specific dice.
-
Six Sided Dice
These dice generally look like a cube, having six sides that are number from one (1) to six (6). Throughout the source material we will refer to these dice as
d6
s.
Although, it is possible to play Contingency RPG with only a single die of each type, there may be an additional cognitive load when determining the results from making a die roll.
Character Sheets
You can download a copy of the blank PDF files that you may need for managing your characters. These files have been designed to be printed double-sided in a landscape orientation, allowing them to be then folded into thirds.
